Product Notes

Château Coudray-Montpensier Chinon is a historic castle that is situated in a tranquil valley in the Loire Valley, France. It was originally built in the 14th century and has been lovingly restored to its former grandeur. Visitors will be captivated by the castle's striking architecture with its grey and white stone façade and turrets. The castle boasts a rich history, with past owners including the Duchess of Montpensier, daughter of King Louis-Philippe. The interior is just as impressive as the exterior with a large oak staircase, grand reception rooms and elegant period furnishings. The castle's vineyards also produce some of the finest Chinon wines. It's a must-visit destination for history buffs and wine enthusiasts alike.

Tasting Notes

This Cabernet Franc has a deep, dark red colour. On the nose, it has bright aromas of pure black fruit with a hint of vanilla. The palate is refreshing with bright acidity and subtle, round tannins, with blackcurrant notes on the finish.

About the Winery

Château Coudray-Montpensier

Though the exact origin of the Chateau du Coudray is not known till now, official records state that this estate could have been in existence from 1242 onwards. Jean de Miremande was the authorized owner of this estate, as per records. After that, many prestigious winemaking families took control of the estate, and introduced many viticultural practices here. Today, this estate's beautiful architecture and the vineyards' fertility are mainly because of the boom that the country experienced in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

The Chateau Coudray-Montpensier, which was always known to be a wine-producing estate, is located in the Chinon appellation. Old vines dominate this plantation. The plots found on this appellation are about 10 years old, and the vineyards are known for their fertile soils and rich terroirs. The total vineyard covers an acre of 34 hectares.

The highlight of the grapes grown here is that the fruits grown here are naturally ripe, fruity, sweet, full-bodied and intense. All the wines of Chateau Coudray Montpensier are made from fruits grown on the Chinon appellation. Cabernet Franc is the only grape varietal used for making wines under this label.

The popular wines of Chateau Coudray-Montpensier are:

  • Gaudeamus – Known for its extremely powerful and balanced taste, this wine made from 100% Cabernet Franc, is made from fruits grown on premium and selected slots of the Chinon appellation.
  • Lapogee – Made from Cabernet Franc grapes grown on old vines in Chinon, this wine has the perfect balance between concentration and acidity. It comes in a beautiful purple colour, which is pleasing to the eye.
  • Chinon Rose – Known for its subtle salmon colour, this rose wine comes with flexibility and roundness, which is hard to find in other rose wines globally.
  • Lapogee Magnum - A premium wine produced under the label, this bottle tastes majestic, and provides a good balance on the palate.
