Firm and distinctive, with a muscular tannic backbone that adds some appealing tension to the dark spiced plum and tobacco notes. An edge of acidity keeps the flavours energetic and lively.

About the Winery

Craggy Range

The Craggy Range wine brand belongs to the historic Hawkes Bay region in New Zealand. It was set up in 1993 by the Peabody couple (Terry and Mary) with the sole aim to create a family legacy that could be run for many generations to come.  Since Terry didn’t want to cultivate vines on any existing vineyard, the couple zeroed in on the bare yet fertile land of New Zealand to set up its vineyard. The brilliant climatic conditions and the soil quality in this country gave wings to the Peabody couple’s winemaking dreams.

The Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing district, located in close proximity to Ngaruroro River in Hawkes Bay, was chosen by the Peabodys and their expert team as the ideal location to cultivate exception red vine varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.  These grapes are known for their characteristic tannin finish, ripe flavours and style, thanks to the sufficient amount of rainfall and sunshine that these vineyards are exposed to.

The Te Muna vineyard in Martinborough, with its high clay-content soils, comprises of two layers of terrace, with the higher layer ideal for growing Pinot Noir and the lower, mineral-rich region apt for Sauvignon Blanc. The summers are dry while the winters are quite mild here, thereby leading to an elegant finish and elegance in the fruits.

Craggy Range wines are crafted in the wineries of Gimblett Gravels and Giants.  Located in the winegrowing district of Gimblett Gravels, this winery is fully equipped to handle the fruits without any compromise. The Giants winery, which contains three cellars has an innovative architectural style that features a circular design of 8000-litre French oak cuves. Sophia, a very special wine from the stables of Craggy Range, is crafted here.

Currently, Craggy Range wines are crafted using varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Gimblett Gravel Blends and Cabernet Sauvignon.
