Domaine Joseph Roty is a French wine company based in the wine-rich Gevrey Chambertin area. The Roty family has been living in Gevrey ever since the 17th century onwards. Therefore, when Joseph started his own label in the late 1960s, he used some of the ancient vines planted by his forefathers to grow high-quality and intense fruits. Yes, the Domaine Joseph Roty wines have the characteristic French richness in them.
Unfortunately, the founder of this label, Joseph, is not very forthcoming or warm to strangers. He doesn’t disclose any information about himself, his vineyards, or his winery to the media. This is one of the major reasons why there is not much information about him on the internet as well. It is estimated that the family owns close to 12 hectares under vine. He is an introvert, who doesn’t trust anyone easily. However, the wines he creates are worth dying for.
It is not surprising to know that he is one of the most reputed wine producers in the Burgundy area. Almost 85% of the wine produced by him is exported to other countries. Therefore, no one has any idea of how much exactly is produced here. Joseph likes to keep outsiders guessing about the extent of his vineyards and his winemaking techniques.
The Gevrey Chambertin region is the biggest wine-producing region in the area of Burgundy. The fruits grown here are deep in colour and have rich tannins. The iron-rich clayey soils of this region, along with the steep slopes of the vines, helps to create some of the best Pinot Noir varietals in the entire world. Some of the popular wines created under the label of Domaine Joseph Roty are:
- Gevrey-Chambertin – Red wine made from 100% Pinot Noir
- Bourgogne Blanc – White wine made from 100% Chardonnay grown in Bourgogne
- Marsannay Rouge – Red wine made from 100% Pinot Noir grown in Marsannay
