About Baron Philippe de Rothschild - Escudo Rojo
Baron Philippe de Rothschild started making wine in Chile in 1997. The inspiration was from Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, baron Philippe’s daughter. There was great potential in Chile, especially because of the Chilean terroir. There were great chances of making some of the highest quality wines that could meet her requirements.
The Rothschild dynasty has a long history dating back to the later 18th century. It all started with Mayer Amstel Rothschild, a merchant based in Frankfurt.
It was Baroness Philippine de Rothchild that introduced the franco-Chilean premium wine named Almaviva. This was made using a terroir that was rather exceptional with its bodega. In that same year, escudo Rojo was launched in Chile. This is a fine branded wine that is Chilean. Escudo Rojo stood as the historical emblem of the family.
In 1998, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild was able to acquire Domaine de Lambert, which was later renamed Domaine de Baronarques. From this estate, white and red wine is produced. The wines have received recognition, having been awarded AOC Limoux rouge appellation.
Currently, the company is headquartered in the Centre Baron Phillippe de Rothschild, which was inaugurated back in 2000. It has modern and bold architecture. It is located in Pauillac and houses the marketing, sales, and administrative departments of the company.
In 2003, Barone Philippe de Rothschild Maipo Chile bodega was inaugurated in 2003. This is where escudo Rojo is produced. In this same place, other high-quality Chilean wines are also produced. The reception and technical facilities were inaugurated by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild in 2011.
In 2013, more varietal wines were introduced, namely cabernet sauvignon, Carmenere, and sauvignon Blanc. 960 hectares of land were acquired from vina Villavicencio in an effort to secure supplies of grapes and make sure that the Chilean wines could be developed further.
After enhancing the family estates and companies, baroness Philippine left an enlarged and greatly modernised Mouton. Today, it is her three children who co-own the chateau. They are committed to excellence as their mother did.
