About Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia - Macán
The venture and endeavour for Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia began in 2004 due to the union of the Compagnie Vinicole Barón Edmond de Rothschild and Tempos Vega Sicilia, as suggested by the winery’s name. The companies shared a common dream and goal of producing and marketing superior wines in the province and autonomous community of La Rioja. They aimed to make excellent products in the singular, inimitable, and unique wine region that could touch the hearts of thousands of people all across the globe.
The fame and name of Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia began to spread in 2009 when the two founding companies put in the results of their research and studies of the terroirs. In addition to that, they acquired several superior vineyards, increasing their production value and quantity. Nevertheless, the winery remained true to its pursuit of outstanding wines. Additionally, it did not compromise the quality of the drinks in any manner.
Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia believes that the region’s climate, soil, and planted vines play a significant role in determining the quality of the produced wines. Thus, the winery checks and supervises all three factors to ensure its products deliver the desired standards. Today, the wine estate owns and manages 92 hectares of land. The vineyards lie on Sierra Cantabria’s slopes between the municipalities of Labastida, Elvillar, Ábalos, and San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
The vineyards of Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia enjoy clay-limestone-type soil. The winery plants primarily the Tempranillo grapevine varieties and makes wines such as Macán Clásico and Macán from them. The entire region experiences a mild climate with influences from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The continental currents prevailing over the terroirs allow the grapevines to grow strong and healthy and bear superior fruits.
