About Castello della Sala
Located at about 18km from the heritage-rich place Orvieto in Umbria, the Castello della Sala wine estate is a beautiful castle, whose history dates back to as early as 1350. This castle is situated on a whopping 1000+acres of land, out of which 42o acres are under vine. These vineyards are located at a very short distance from Tuscany. They are beautifully sandwiched between the Paglia River and the Monte Nibbio Summit, which add to the flavour of the fruits grown here.
The vineyards are located at a height of about 700 to 1500 feet above sea level, which makes it a great place for growing some of the interesting native and international white varietals. Procanico and Grechetto are the indigenous white varietals that are popular here.
Apart from those, you will also see the popular white varietals of Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Pinot Blanc, Viognier and Traminer. The only red varietal that you will notice on these vineyards is the Pinot Noir. The soil here is clayey and calcareous with the presence of some fossil shells as well. The elevation of the vines and exposure to the sun gives a lot of intensity, aroma and flavour to the whites and reds grown here.
The year 1985 was quite a significant one for the Castello della Sala brand. This was the year that the expert winemaking team here created the Cervaro della Sella, one of the first white wines in Italy that underwent two processes, malolactic fermentation and barrique-ageing. A blend of Chardonnay and Grechetto varietals was created to make this wine, which is now quite popular among wine lovers across the globe.
The exotic cellar of this brand dates back to the 15th century and is located inside the traditional castle. While century-old practices are still followed here to create unique wines, the team also makes use of modern practices and techniques.
