About Domaine de la Solitude
The Domaine de la Solitude wine estate located in Chateauneuf du Pape has a rich history that dates back to almost the 12th century. It was during this time that the Barberini family (still considered as one of the most reputed and respected families in Rome) moved to the Avignon region and started their own family-owned wine company.
However, the company reached great heights and achieved a lot of success when the descendants of the Barberini family, the Lancon family members took over the control of the estate. It was only in the 1980s that the Lancon brothers, Michel and Jean started to manage the estate and the vineyards completely. Today, the younger generation of the Lancon family is doing a great job of keeping up with the reputation and legacy of the family.
Located in Chateauneuf du Pape, the estate of this family is spread across 38 hectares, out of which 30 hectares are planted with red varietals and the remaining 8 with white varietals. All the vines planted here are known for their age, with the oldest Grenache vine being over 100 years old. Apart from these 38 hectares, the Lancon family also owns 48 hectares of vineyards in one of the premium wine regions of France, Cotes du Rhone. Here also, almost 43 hectares are dedicated to growing red vines and the remaining is dedicated to white vines.
Today, even the logo’s design of this wine label speaks volumes about the family’s rich history and tradition. While the three hats on the label are dedicated to the family’s ancestors (two bishops and a pope), the three bees denote the family’s regal weapon that was used during the Middle Ages. The label also contains a medal, which represents the medal that was received by one of the family’s members from the great king, Napoleon after the Battle of Waterloo.
