The estate is located in the Entre-deux-Mers region. The tides of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers meet here. Lafite was first referenced in 1234 with Rimbaud de Lafite. Lafite is also mentioned as a medieval fief in the fourteenth century. The origin of the name is the term la hite from the Gascony language. The word means hillock. It is a possibility that the property had vineyards even before the 17th century. It was during this time that the estate gained a reputation in winemaking. Jacques de Segur planted the Lafite vineyards. 

Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite has a long history in winemaking and distribution in London and the world. Initially, the wines were sold in auctions in London and were described as a french claret. The estate faced a lot of crises because of wars and disasters.  The winery faced issues because of the mildew attack and phylloxera crisis that affected the vineyards. The great depression and world war led to a fall in prices. Some of the vintages were declassified in this period.

World war II also caused a great ordeal; at some point, the Rothschild properties were confiscated only for possession to be recovered in 1945. The estate was re-established, and operations continued. Excellent vintages were released over the years, which helped the estate regain its glory. With the reestablishment of business, a lot of steps and measures were taken to ensure that things worked out.
