About Marqués de Murrieta
The origin and story of Marqués de Murrieta remain closely linked with the renowned Spanish wine region of Rioja. In 1852, Don Luciano Murrieta prepared the first Rioja wine using the techniques and skills he learned and acquired in Bordeaux. He did so with the intention and aim of sustaining the unique and traditional winemaking practice and method over a significant time. Don Luciano aspired to create superior and excellent wines with outstanding ageing potential. Furthermore, he wished to export the drinks outside Spain and increase their fame on the global market. It led to the formation or creation of the foundation of the reputed winery, Marqués de Murrieta.
Since 1983, the estate and property of Marqués de Murrieta have remained under the ownership and management of the Cebrián-Sagarriga family. They have led the winery with praiseworthy effort and professionalism, allowing the wine estate to reach the fame and glory it enjoys today. The Cebrián-Sagarriga siblings, who supervise and guide Marqués de Murrieta’s operations, remain proud and true to their Galician roots, honouring their parents through their success. They work with the goal and determination to grow the winery with the same enthusiasm and strength that their parents displayed.
Under the Cebrián-Sagarriga family, Marqués de Murrieta saw significant renovations and restorations till 2021. It allowed the winery to acquire new and better winemaking facilities that, in turn, optimised the winemaking process and procedures. Today, Marqués de Murrieta remains equipped with contemporary technologies and gets considered one of the most advanced wineries across the entire globe.
Marqués de Murrieta considers its vineyards its passion, uniqueness, and history. Thus, the winery cares significantly for its terroirs and parcels that expand over 300 hectares in Rioja Alta’s southern region. Additionally, the region’s ideal microclimate and soil conditions support the growth of magnificent grapevines.
