About Sula Vineyards
Sula Vineyards was formed in the year 1999 by Rajeev Samant, in Nashik, India. Rajeev set up Sula as he realised that his hometown, Nashik, had great potential to produce table grapes. His company started growing phenomenally over the next few years. Today, Sula Vineyards is the top wine company in India and Nashik, undoubtedly came to be known as the country’s wine capital.
Apart from the quality of the wines produced by Sula, the one point that attracts wine lovers to this brand is that it practices sustainable winemaking techniques in its vineyards. The people who work at the Sula vineyards are from very low-income families. Therefore, the brand takes huge pride in being in India and providing empowerment to the weaker sections of the economy.
The vineyards are spread across 3000 acres, producing some of the top-notch quality of grapes using a blend of traditional and modern winemaking methods. The vineyards are located in Nashik and Dindori. At the wineries, American oak barrels are used for fermenting premium wines, to restore the complexity and flavour of the fruits.
The wineries are located across two states – Maharashtra and Karnataka. All thee wineries are equipped with high-class technology. Together, all the wineries are good enough to process a capacity of 12 million litres of wine. Before starting Sula Wines, Rajeev learnt the basics of winemaking from a Californian winery. Today, the owner of that winery and a good friend of Rajeev, Kerry Damskey, is the master winemaker at Sula.
Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot and Syrah are the varietals that are used mostly for making red wines at Sula. For the white wines, varietals such as Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling are used. Apart from the usual reds and whites, Sula Vineyards produces some sparkling and rose’ wines as well.
