About the Winery

Tenuta San Guido

Tenuta San Guido is a highly reputed winery in the Bolgheri village in the Livorno Province in Italy. The wine estate had been established in 1944 by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the marchese of the region at that time. Tenuta San Guido was the first winery to make and sell a wine made using Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1940s. The success and initiative could be attributed to the founder’s foresight and experimentation.

Tenuta San Guido is exceedingly famous for its ‘Super Tuscan’ wines. Besides that, the winery remains reputed for producing superior and high-quality Sassicaia. It is a red wine made using the traditional Bordeaux style. Initially, the famed wine remained a personal delicacy of the Mario Incisa della Rocchetta for several years. Nicolò and Piero Antinori, the marchese’s son and nephew, respectively, convinced him to sell the wine commercially. Thus, the sale of the much sought-after product commenced with the 1968 vintage. It was unveiled and released in 1971. The development and sale started with small numbers. However, the high demand compelled Mario to hire Giacomo Tachis, an enologist, to refine the wine even further and increase its production rates.

Tenuta San Guido is the sole winery entitled to the production and development of DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia. Thus, the wine estate owns several plots and lands around Bolgheri. It cultivates and harvests the grapes from these vineyards that extend and expand over 75 hectares. These parcels have a fixed distribution of different grape varieties. It assigns 85% of the plots to Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% to Cabernet Franc. This distinction allows the staff and workers to pay attention to each variety and ensure they grow to be of the highest quality. It serves as one of the reasons behind the superiority of the wines produced by Tenuta San Guido.
