The 40-hectare Kooyong Winery located in Mornington Peninsula in Australia, is one for its cool climate and excellent location. This is the prime reason why the place is ideal for growing varietals such as Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It is located in the Port Philip Estate, which in itself is a piece of architectural brilliance.
A few years ago, varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were believed to be compatible only with premium areas such as Burgundy in France. However, with Burgundy’s maritime climate and cool temperatures being available in Mornington Peninsula, this place is quietly becoming one of the premium wine regions in the world.
Kooyong winery, especially, makes the best use of this place to grow excellent quality of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay here. This is the main reason why Kooyong wines are on par with the best in the business, the French Burgundy wines. Sustainable viticultural techniques and minimalist winemaking approaches are followed by the expert winemaking team at Kooyong, to ensure that the resultant wines produced are complex, unique and structured.
The Gjergja family established this winery during 1996 and it has been doing a great job of operating the winery till now. The vineyards are built over an area of 40 hectares, out of which, most of the land is dedicated for cultivating Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Pinot Gris is also being grown in small, selected lots at the vineyards here.
The popularity of Mornington Peninsula is expected to hit the headlines soon because their wines are their true ambassadors. The vineyards are located at altitudes ranging from 40 to 25om, making the harvest process easier than ever.
Also, the volcanic soils from the Red Hill, sedimentary yellow duplex from Tuerong, sandy-clay & loamy soil from Moorooduc and the brown duplex soil from Merricks, make this place a paradise for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines.
