Organic Wines

The requirements and rules for what can be classed as an organic wine vary from country to country. However, as a general overview such wines are made using organic viticultural and winemaking practices. This includes but is not limited to restrictions on the use of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers, genetically modified organisms, sulphur dioxide, types of winemaking treatments, fining agents etc.

Organic certification is required if the producer wishes to display or market their organic credentials. There are many certification bodies in the world and despite increasing harmonisation, each can have slightly different standards and requirements especially when it comes to sulfur dioxide. This means that some wines can be subject to stricter rules than others. However, a universal requirement for all vineyards that would like to be certified organic is to undergo a period of conversion working to organic standards.

More and more people opt to buy organic wines for not only environmental but also health reasons, as there are fewer harmful chemicals in the final product, potentially reducing health risks associated with pesticide residues.
