About the Winery

Quinta da Fonte Souto

Portugal-based wine company, Symington owns many wine estates in the country, making it one of the biggest in the country. The Quinta da Fonte Souto is Symington’s first estate outside the premium Douro region. Located in the Alto Alentejo region in the southern part of Portugal, this estate is close to the Sao Mamede range, which keeps the place cool at all times. The microclimate of this region and the schist & granite soils of this place make the fruits intense and full-bodied.

Currently, this estate spreads across 207 hectares, out of which 43 are under vine. The vines are planted at an average altitude of 490 to 550m above sea level on predominantly granite soils. The grape varietals planted here are:

  • Red – Trincadeira, Aragones, Alfrocheiro, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Toriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon
  • White – Arinto, Verdelho and a blend of other old varietals

The word “Souto” refers to a place that is filled with chestnut trees. This place is named thus, because it is situated within a dense forest comprising an area of 100 hectares. The highlight of these forested areas is that almost 33% of them are filled with oak trees, a typical landmark of the landscapes of the Alentejo regions.

The flagship wines of this region are:

Quinta da Fonte Souto (Red) – Made from the best parcels of Alicante Bouschet and Syrah, this is the estate’s flagship wine. Thanks to the low production maintained at the winery, this wine is known for its concentrated and precise quality. The elegance of these wines comes from the high altitude of the vineyards located in Serra de Sao Mamede.

This estate rose to prominence in 2017, when it released its first vintage. It started producing wines in 2019. The dry and hot climate helped to improve the quality of white and red wines produced here.
