About the Winery

Te Mata Estate

Te Mata Estate is a family-owned wine estate that produces wines from one of the world’s most beautiful and fertile vineyards of New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay. This estate is known for producing wines from grapes sourced from its own vineyards located in a selected spot in Hawke’s Bay. This region is protected by the mountains in the western region, and it experiences an excellent maritime climate with low rainfall. Therefore, Te Mata wines are classy, elegant and true representations of the richness of the terroirs.

All the wines are made from grapes grown in the Havelock Hills Vineyard in Hawke’s Bay. This vineyard owns the distinction of being the first legally protected vineyards in the country of New Zealand. The first vines were planted here in 1892. The vineyards are located towards the north-facing slopes. Five sites have been identified here for planting vines. There are various soil types in this vineyard. While the sandy loam soils dominate the eastern part of the vineyard, sandy loam soils with a hint of clay and silica pan dominate the western part of the vineyard.

With its steep but gentle slopes, the Havelock Hills Vineyard is a great place for growing vines in terraces. The grapes that grow here have an excellent balance, power and richness. This place is also home to some of the other beautiful vineyards – Awatea, Elston and Coleraine, owned by the Buck Family Home. The unique terroirs and excellent climatic conditions of Havelock Hills Vineyards are well-protected. Today, it is one of the oldest wine-growing areas in New Zealand, as this place has been under the vine for over 120 years now.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the varietals grown here. The wines produced from the other vineyards are named according to those vineyards where grapes are grown.
