Product Notes

Tenuta San Leonardo San Leonardo is a historic winery located in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northern Italy. The estate has a long and interesting history, with the main villa dating back to the 18th century. The property was acquired by the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family in the early 20th century and has been in their hands ever since. Today, San Leonardo is one of the most respected wine producers in Italy, known for their classic Bordeaux-style blends crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carmenere. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for up to two years to achieve a balanced, elegant flavour profile. The estate's vineyards are located at high altitudes, allowing for slow maturation and the development of complex aromas and flavours. Tenuta San Leonardo San Leonardo is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history and culture of Italian wine.

Tasting Notes

This wine is likely to have the broadest drinking window of any modern San Leonardo. Despite the deep purple colour, it is already open and generous on the nose, with vivid ripe morello cherry fruit. The gentle extraction has imbued the wine with a cashmere texture even at this young stage, while the palate is lifted by the leafy, currant-bud notes that are San Leonardo’s signature, reflecting as they do the influence of cool air flowing down from the Dolomites. Balance, charm, and great ageing potential – this San Leonardo has it all

About the Winery

Tenuta San Leonardo

The family-owned wine estate of Tenuta San Leonardo, located in Italy, has a rich history that dates back to 1724. Located near the Trentino Mountains and Lake Garda, this estate follows the 300-year old viticultural practices even today, as a result of which, it crafts fresh, elegant and crisp wines to date. Over 300 years ago, the men of this historic wine family were warriors, who had great pride in their professions. One of the ancestors of this family, Marchese Tullo married Gemma de Gresti. Gresti’s family had owned the Tenuta San Leonardo wine estate for over 200 years. So, from then on, the family started to take winemaking seriously, and the rest is history!

The fermentation cellar contains concrete vats for the juices to contain the original character and flavour of the fruits.  Here, the red grapes undergo fermentation for not more than 15 to 18 days. Only natural methods and indigenous yeasts are used during the process of fermentation. One of the most important winemaking philosophies followed here is minimal intervention. Even as the fruits are being fermented, they undergo many pumpover stages.

Some of the popular wines of this label are:

Carmenere – Made from 100% Carmenere varietals, these grapes are harvested from the estate's oldest vineyards. Small concrete vats are used for fermenting these wines, while once and twice-used French oak barrels are used for maturing the wines.

San Leonardo – Considered the flagship wine of the estate, this Bordeaux-blend wine is known for its longevity. It is made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Carmenere and 10% Merlot.

Riesling – Known for its multiple layers of complexity, this wine is made from 100% Riesling varietal. These grapes undergo 12 hours of maceration while they are on their skins. Then the grapes are fermented and pressed gently for about 25 days, before they are matured for 12 months in once and twice-used French Oak casks.
