Italian wines have always enjoyed popularity all over the world. However, during the 1960s, the Italian wine market was struggling a bit. It was during this time that Domenico Poggiali chose to set up his brand Felsina in Castelnuovo Berardebenga in Italy. Felsina means the Land of the Light and Poggiali started this brand to represent the richness of the Italian terroir.
Today, the Poggiali family takes care of the winemaking process at vineyards and the winery to ensure that the wines crafted here represent the true Italian and Tuscan culture. Sangiovese is the flagship varietal cultivated at the vineyards here.
The diverse nature of landscapes, microclimate and soil qualities found in the Chianti region make it ideal for growing the flavourful Sangiovese varietal. The team gives extreme focus to this fruit by investing a lot in researching about the same. Ever since the 1990s, the Poggiali family has been replacing the old vines with the new ones in order to create more flavourful Sangiovese fruits than before.
While the senior Poggiali family member and founder set up a small stone cellar in the tufa hills during 1966, the next generation brought about modern techniques in it during 1998. Some of the popular Felsina wines are:
- Fontalloro
- Rancia
- Colonia
- Berardenga Riserva
- Berardenga
All of these are made from Sangiovese
- Maestro Raro – made from Cabernet Sauvignon
- I Sistri – made from Chardonnay
- Vin Santo – made from Trebbiano, Malvasia and Sangiovese
- Spumante Brut – made from Sangiovese, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
- Spumante Brut Millesimato – made from Sangiovese, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
- Spumante Brut Rose – made from Sangiovese, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
Though new winemaking techniques have been introduced, they haven’t taken away the passion of the Poggiali family at all. The family’s heart still lies in making classy and elegant Italian wines.
