Wine-growing regions

The following wine-growing regions are classified by the new law as the areas apt for making New Zealand wine:

Northland - Most northern part of New Zealand, known for its proximity to the equator; known for its abundance of Chardonnay cultivation

Auckland - Famous for crafting New Zealand’s best Chardonnay white wine; also known for its other Italian and Spanish grape varietals

Gisborne - Most easterly wine-producing region in the world; known for its cultivation of Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer

Hawke’s Bay - Oldest wine producing region in New Zealand; Bordeaux blend and Syrah wines with a dominance of Merlot grape wines are famous here

Wairarapa - Very small wine producing area known for its Pinot Noir cultivation

Nelson - Sunniest wine area in New Zealand; famous for producing late-harvest wines

Marlborough - Largest wine-producing district in New Zealand and accounts for close to 75% of the country’s total wine production; famous for its Sauvignon Blanc vines

Canterbury - Contains many vineyards centred in and around the city of Christchurch; while the northern area is known for its cultivation of Riesling,  the southern area is famous for its Pinot noir grape varietals

Waitaki Valley - Most modern wine producing area in New Zealand; famous for cultivating Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer wines

Central Otago - Regarded as the most southerly wine producing area in the world; Vineyards located at an average of 200 to 400m above sea level, making it the tallest in New Zealand.
