Sogrape Vinhos, the reputed Portugal wine brand has been in the business since 1942. It had already created a massive niche for itself in the popular Portuguese wine-growing areas of Dao, Douro and Vinhos Verdes. To widen its presence, the group had to naturally make inroads into the country’s most rapidly growing wine-zone of Alentejo.
After making wines from the grapes sourced from the neighbouring Vidigueira zone at a local winery, Sogrape acquired the Herdade do Peso wine estate during 1996. It was right after this that lots of developmental activities started taking place in the vineyards.
Within a couple of years after this acquisition, Sogrape also constructed its own winery here. The team hired international wine experts and consultants to start making top-notch, distinct wines using its own facilities and technology.
The estate of Herdade do Peso is located in the Vidigueira county in Pedrogao. The estate covers an area of 460 hectares, out of which, 160 are under vines. Among these 160 hectares of vine area, you will find 152 hectares exclusively dedicated to cultivation of red grape varietals such as Alfrocheiro, Moreto, Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, Tricandeira and Periquita. Only 8 hectares are allotted for planting white varietals such as Antao Vaz and Arinto.
In this estate, you will find 10 fermentation tanks that can handle a capacity of 30000 litres at the maximum. Temperature-controlled tanks are used for efficient fermentation. The winery can store close to 5000 - 35000 litres of wine in their 19 heavy-duty stainless steel tanks. The wines produced in this area are authentic and distinct, true to the brand they represent, Alentejo.
The winery that was constructed in the Herdade do Peso estate in 1998 is quite huge and has the potential to handle around 750kg of grapes. Sogrape proactively set up this winery long back and it can be upgraded to handle up to 1.22million kilos now.
