About the Winery

Fairview

Located in the Paarl region in the province of Western Cape, the South African Fairview wine brand is owned by Charles Back, who also owns other popular brands such as Goats Do Roam Wine Company and The Spice Route Winery. In 1902, Charles Louis Back purchased the current Fairview wine estate and property from its previous owner. Today, the Back family’s Fairview farm covers 320 hectares, out of which 12o hectares are under vines.

The Back family has its own vineyards in the areas of Paarl, Stellenbosch, Darling and Swartland. Charles Back was very considerate towards the wine growers and farmers. As a result of this, he founded the Fair Valley Worker’s Association in 1997. Thanks to this initiative, the employees, who worked in Back’s vineyard, got a chance to own their own piece of land.

The details of the Fairview vineyards are as follows:

Paarl

This vineyard covers an area of 350 hectares and is located on the slopes of the Paarl Mountains. The soil contains lots of decomposed granite. The proximity to the mountains keeps the climate quite cool all through the day, even during the summers. These conditions make the land favourable for cultivating Shiraz, Petite Syrah, Viognier and Grenache.

Darling

This 140-hectare vineyard is located on the western hills and is dominated by the Atlantic maritime climate. You will notice a distinct quality of deep reddish-coloured oak leef soil here. Sauvignon Blanc is planted on almost 60 hectares here. Small lots of Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot Cabernet are grown here.

Swartland

Covering an area of 155 hectares, this area is famous for the Swartland Revolution started by Charles Back. Diverse soil types can be found here. Shiraz, Carignan, Tannat, Mourvedre and Petite Syrah are the main varietals here.

Stellenbosch

This 35-hectare vineyard is where you will find the Bordeaux grape varietals such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
