Product Notes

Mar de Frades Albariño Atlántico DO Rías Baixas is a white wine with a bright, straw-like color and a complex aroma. It has intense notes of tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango, combined with hints of apple and pear. On the palate, the wine is refreshing, crisp, and dry with a balanced acidity. It has a long finish with a pleasant mineral aftertaste that showcases its Atlantic heritage. Mar de Frades Albariño Atlántico DO Rías Baixas is made from 100% Albariño grapes grown in the Rías Baixas region, located on the Atlantic coast of Galicia in Spain, where the ocean breeze and the cool climate make it ideal for producing fresh and vibrant wines.

Tasting Notes

APPEARANCE: Bright, pale lemon in colour, with inviting flickers of lime. NOSE: Fresh and intense, with notes of wild flowers, eucalyptus, mint and tropical fruit. MOUTH: Refreshing, vibrant, fluid and ‘electric’. Harmonious and full volume, accompanied by smoothness and character.

About the Winery

Mar de Frades

Mar de Frades, the Spanish winery, was established in 1987, to bring out the best of the premium white-wine making potential of the Salnes Valley. This is the place where the famous white varietal of Albarino is cultivated. Some of Spain’s most sophisticated and historic wines are produced using this grape. Therefore, it is not surprising to know that Mar de Frades is one of the biggest and reputed wine producers of the Rias Baixas Designation of Origin.

Surrounded by the cool breeze from the Atlantic Ocean, the Mar de Frades winery is blessed to be situated in a strategic location – at the base of the Finca Valinas vineyards, one of the famous in Spain. The historic Salnes Valley is home to over 150 winegrowers. The Mar de Frades works closely with them to use fruits grown on their vineyards. In addition to this, the group also owns vineyards in three important wine-rich areas such as:

  • The plot between the Salnes Valley and Ulla River – almost 30 hectares
  • Separate plot in Salnes Valley – almost 21 hectares
  • A small area in the reputed vineyards of Finca Valinas- almost 8 hectares

The soils here mostly contain granite and sand, which lend a lot of minerality to the aromatic Albarino grape varietal grown here in abundance.  Some of the popular wines created by this label are:

Albarino Atlantico – This is made from the classic Albarino grapes that are processed with the help of Ganimdes macerators. Natural yeasts are used for fermentation to retain the Atlantic nature and aroma of the grapes used for this wine.

Finca Valinas – Considered to be one of the best white wines of Spain, this wine is made from premium and selective Albarino grapes grown in the Finca Valinas vineyards. The fruits’ own lees are used for ageing and French oak barrels are used for fermenting this wine.
