The family-owned Bastianich winery was established during 1997 in the Friuli Venezia Giuli area. Within a short time, the Bastianich brand has become an excellent ambassador of the Friulian wines across the globe. Today, this wine forms an integral part of the menu in the family’s restaurants in New York and other global locations.
The Bastianich vineyards cover an area of 40 hectares, all of which are located in the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC in Italy. There are two distinct climatic zones in the same DOC, which lends a lot of vibrancy to the fruits cultivated here. The main vineyard is nestled well within the localities of Buttrio and Premariacco, the areas that are the warmest in the entire DOC.
The proximity of the Adriatic Sea makes the temperature warm enough in these vineyards for the grapes to grow well. This vineyard underwent a lot of re-farming and re-terracing in 2002 to improve the quality of the vines grown here. Bastianich’s famous cru wines such as Vespa Blanco, Vespa Rosso, Plus and Calbrone are made from grapes grown in these vineyards.
The other climatic zone in the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC is located at Cividale. This vineyard is located close to the mountains; therefore, the hillside breezes make the grapes full-bodied and flavourful here. The aromatic wines of Bastianich’s Vini Orsone range are made from grapes grown in Cividale.
One of the flagship wines from this label is the white wine named Vespa Blanco. It is made from a blend of some of the best white wine varietals such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Wine experts believe that one has to taste this wine to understand the complexity, longevity and intensity of the whites produced in the Friulian region. You can experience a wide range of flavours and aromas such as citrus, floral, honey and fruits in this wine.
