The wines of South Africa are known for their unique nature that reflect the spirit of the terroir and the character of their region where the fruit is cultivated. Gabrielskloof wines are no different. It was during 2001 that Bernard Heyns zeroed in on a farm, Avonturr, located on the outskirts of Botrivier, to realise his aim of creating wines that reflected that richness of their terroir.
The farm which Bernard bought, and the area surrounding it, is today known as Gabrielskloof. Sustainability is the key principle followed here, as all the vineyard related work is done by hand. Right from the time of planting the vines until the time of harvest, natural materials are used, so as to not disturb the environment in any way. The fact is the vineyards of Gabrielskloof are given a status of Biodiversity and Wine Champion, is a testimony for this.
The winemaking process also takes place with as little minimum intervention as possible. Using natural yeasts for fermentation and the finest grain French oak barrels during the process are some steps that the winemaking team at Gabrielskloof takes in this regard.
The wines created here are classified into two types - the Estate Range and Landscape Series.
