Tornatore is a renowned Italian winery established by Francesco Tornatore in 2012. It lies on the northern slopes of the famous Mount Etna on Sicily Island in the commune of Castiglione di Sicilia. Since its establishment, the winery has produced excellent wines that remain reputed for their superior flavour, taste, mouthfeel, aroma, and colour.
Tornatore’s fame is primarily thanks to its founder and owner, Francesco Tornatore. Francesco came from a family of winemakers who delved into the art and craft since the middle of the 19th century. Guiseppe, Francesco’s great-grandfather, started the vine-growing and winemaking legacy in the family. He worked on and cultivated two hectares of land in Linguaglossa town. In the later years, he passed down his knowledge and skills to the next generations, which eventually reached Francesco.
Francesco was the first in his family to attend university and become an engineer. However, he always remained attracted to his family’s business and returned to Castiglione di Sicilia to continue the legacy. Today, Tornatore owns over 60 hectares of land under his guidance and supervision. The winery manages and cultivates vineyards at elevations or altitudes from 400-700 meters above sea level. The parcels remain spread across the districts of Trimarchisa and Pietrarizzo. On top of that, Tornatore uses solely the native grapevine varieties of the Castiglione di Sicilia commune and region.
Tornatore believes every action confers an impact on nature and the environment. Thus, the winery has adopted a sustainable approach to its vinification and viticultural techniques and practices. It did so because it trusted that respecting the natural attributes and qualities of the land could help produce superior wines. On top of that, Tornatore operates with the goal of minimal carbon dioxide emissions, biodiversity preservation, and efficient resource use to prevent wastage and loss as much as possible.
