Loxarel is a Spanish family-owned wine estate that was established in 1985. It was Joseph Mitjans who started producing the first 1000 bottles of sparkling wines under this label when he was only 16 years old. Today, the young generation of the Mitjans family, along with the expert winemaking team, has been following biodynamic viticultural practices. This is to ensure that the brand doesn’t lose out on the vital and original characters of the terroirs in its wines.
Joseph and his wife, Teresa Nin currently own 20 hectares under vine at the farmhouse located at Vilobi del Penedes. Teresa’s family already own 20 hectares in a high appellation located at El Pla de Manileu. The Spanish, indigenous, red grape varietal of Xarel-Lo is planted mostly on the vineyards here. The winery is also named after this variety. Apart from this, you will also find other rare & native varietals such as Garnacha, Macabeo and Parallada at the vineyards of this family estate.
The main aim of this winery was to ensure that the minerality of the xarel-lo varietal was brought out in the best form possible, thanks to the innovative & blend of winemaking techniques. The year 2011 saw Loxarel launch its own line of natural wines that were crafted without the use of any additives or sulphites. Made using 100% biodynamic viticultural practices, these wines are true representations of the relationship between man and vine.
One of the distinctions of the Loxarel Winery is that it is regarded as a part of the TerraDinamica Association. This is a one of a kind of a group that has been authorised by the Catalonia Government to carry out biodynamic farming in this region. The influence of the moon on the growth and harvesting of grapes is unmissable on this farm. As part of its biodynamic techniques, the use of fertilisers and chemical-based manures are kept as low as possible.
