A versatile and popular drink, white wine is produced and enjoyed all over the world. Traces of white wine were found inside clay jars in Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb and in ancient Greece, renowned physician Hippocrates prescribed it to his patients.
If you need some help choosing between a light and fruity white wine or something intense and tangy to accompany a specific meal, the best place to start is by looking at the varieties of grape used. We include this information in all of our listings to make it easier for you, along with notes about each particular bottle.
The world’s two most popular white wine grape varieties are Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Although these originated in the Loire Valley and Burgundy in France, they are now grown and used to create white wine all over the world. Sauvignon Blanc grapes produce a dry, aromatic wine, paler in colour than some other white wines. Used in the white wines of Bordeaux they are becoming increasingly popular in Chilean and South African white wines too.
Perhaps the best known white, Chardonnay grapes are used to make many types of dry white wine, from Chablis to Californian Chardonnay. Pinot Grigio are another popular grape variety used to make, crisp, light refreshing wine. If you’re looking for something sweeter, choose wines made from Riesling or Chenin Blanc grapes, which produce darker, straw-coloured white wines with a distinctly aromatic flavour.
